Overview
Croatia started their home #EuroVolleyW campaign in Pool C on a high note with two straight-set victories over Switzerland and Belarus. The team under guidance of Daniele Santarelli has shown so far very well-balanced game led by their young setter Klara Peric. On the other side Slovakia will play only their second match. After losing in four sets to Hungary on Friday, they had time to analyse own mistakes and fully recover to play today with freshness.

Match Report
Croatia celebrate third victory in a row
Article
22 August 2021
On Sunday afternoon, Croatia claimed their third victory in a row, with this securing their spot in the 8th Finals of the tournament. After they previously beat Switzerland and Belarus, Croatia swept aside Slovakia in three sets as well (25-21, 25-14, 25-13).
However, the hosts seemed to have started the first set either not warmed up properly or not motivated enough. The initiative was definitely on the Slovakian side in those first minutes. When we actually thought the set might go to Slovakia, Croatian coach Daniele Santarelli called their first time-out, at 16-12 followed by another one at 18-12 for Slovakia. After that second break, instead of outside spiker Matea Ikic, Lucija Mlinar joined the game and the Croatian girls finally started to play properly. They put together a few blocks in a row (eventually recording five in the first set), as captain Samanta Fabris was great in her attacks. Instead of Bozana Butigan, at 21-21, Santarelli sent in Karla Klaric and the set went to the Croats.
After losing the first set, Slovakia basically fell apart and the Croats scored one point after the other and had no problems taking the second set as well with 25-14. The third one was a copy of the second one and ended with a landslide 25-13 to seal the third straight 3-0 victory for the home side in Zadar with four players – Fabris, Butigan, Mlinar and Laura Milos – all top scoring with 11 points apiece.

Beta Dumancic“We are obviously happy with the third win in a row. I cannot say that we expected to start the championship this way, as that might sound arrogant, but we have been working very hard for this – so our success does not come as a surprise. We probably felt some pressure at the beginning of the match – as much as we did with the previous ones, but we found our flow and everything went well. We now have a rest day, will prepare for Hungary and after that think of the match with Italy."
Middle blocker of Croatia
Karin Palgutova“It really is a pity that we started the first set very well and did not win it. We were leading by five or six points and in one rotation we got stuck. They pushed us really hard. Afterwards, it was harder and harder for us. I think, it is already the second game we are blocked so often. We struggled to find good solutions to put the ball down, we attacked straight into the block, so it becomes easy for the opponent to defend and it is mentally tough when you are blocked so many times.”
