The Hungarian women’s national team got closer to reaching EuroVolley 2021 by claiming a third win in qualification Pool E to finish the first tournament in Belfort undefeated. On Sunday evening, they snatched an emphatic 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-13) victory over Denmark.

Hungary established their domination on the court early into the first set. Relying on better serving and more unforced errors from the opponents, they broke away to open a wide gap. In the end, it was a kill block by Zsofia Gyimes, Hungury’s only one in the set, that ended it at 25-18. With captain Helena Elbaek leading the way, Denmark stepped up the offence to maintain the lead from 6-5 through 14-13 in the second set, but Hungary’s spikers also improved their effort to turn things around to 25-20. Coach Jakub Gluszak’s team prevailed so emphatically in the third set that he decided to give most of his key players some rest as the set unfolded. That did not change the situation on the court and Hungary continued to dominate through to the end, with sub-in Orsolya Papp hammering the winner through the middle for 25-13.

Denmark’s Helena Elbaek was the top scorer of the match on 15 points.

Jakub Gluszak, head coach of Hungary: “I expected a tough game for us because yesterday we spent a lot of energy, physically, but also mentally. I am satisfied that we won, even if we did not make a good match. But the most important thing is that we go back to Hungary with three victories. We did a huge step towards EuroVolley qualification, but still we have to keep focused, because we have to confirm it in Budapest next weekend.”
